  ABOUT ICE-TECH Rx
Thin-ICE Rx Technology

ICE-TECH Rx Research and Development was created in January of 2003. The ICE-TECH Research and Development division had a simple mission statement:

"Develop the best sunglass lens for prescription use."

ICE-TECH has utilized its many technological developments used to produce the finest non-prescription polarized lenses as the basis for the development of the finest polarized prescription lenses. After exploring all currently used technologies for the production of prescription eyewear it was determined that better methods of producing ICE-TECH prescription sunglasses was needed.

Next, the processes were developed to achieve what has not been possible before with a prescription sunglass lens. ICE-TECH has built the lab of the future today. After over two years of development, the ICE-TECH Rx Lab is complete. This facility features a state of the art clean room and a non-traditional lens production process capable of producing prescription lens surfaces with exact corrected vision powers (no fining or polishing required). This method of production is so accurate that the lens is manufactured to tolerances not possible before. ICE-TECH can produce a lens with substantially more consistent accuracy than has ever been available. The ICE-TECH Rx lab does not use conventional heavy polishing techniques. By eliminating the conventional approach, which used a set of tools called laps, we are able to offer prescriptions that are more accurate that has ever been possible and these prescriptions fit the frames perfectly.

If a frame is made for a six base lens an ICE-TECH lens with a 6 base front curve is used, if the frame is made for an 8 base lens then an ICE-TECH 8 base front curve is used to produce the prescription. A lens generated through this process can be custom matched to the patient's prescription and frame choice, which makes a thinner and lighter lens, with less material at the edge so that fitting difficulties normally experienced with stronger prescriptions become almost non-existent. This is ICE-TECH Thin-ICE Rx Technology. This revolutionary process allows lens powers from +7 all the way to -8 with astigmatic corrections to -5 to be installed into cool wrapped style frames! No more steering your customers away from the styles they want because it can't be made, it CAN be done! Not only is it now possible to get them into the styles they desire, it is accomplished with none of the drawbacks previously encountered. ICE-TECH Advanced Rx orders take the designated prescription and maintains this prescribed Rx, based on the standard 13.5 mm vertex distance and flat frame face as prescriptions are written. These prescription orders are adjusted for vertex distance, wrap angle of the frame and pantoscopic tilt of the frame. These adjustments give the patient the same power that is prescribed for a 13.5 mm vertex distance and a flat frame face.

Further advancements in ICE-TECH Rx include ICE-TECH's super durable thermally cured hard surface treatment, Titanium-ICE. The Titanium-ICE hardened outer surfaces are applied in a class 100 clean room. This clean room environment ensures a contaminant free superior bond of the multi layered, thermally cured hard surface. To produce the Titanium-ICE surface, first a cushion element is applied. After the cushion element is applied an additional ultra tough, optically clear hard surface element is applied. Again, ICE-TECH applies the combination of hardness and resistance to scratches to produce the most durable surface possible. This is one of the many features of an ICE-TECH Advanced Polarized Lens. This cushion element, followed by a specially developed thermally cured final element, has previously been very difficult to apply. This is due to the fact that a polarized film within the lens will not withstand the temperatures needed to cure most thermally cured final surfaces. ICE-TECH has developed Titanium-ICE a proprietary process to overcome this problem. ICE-TECH has spent years developing the combination of technologies to facilitate the production of the best lens possible.

After the Titanium-ICE is cured, the anti-reflective and mirror processes are bonded to the lens. The anti-reflective process is a multi-layer Anti-Reflective combination of high index and low index materials, the combination of which produces the ability to increase light transmission and almost eliminate reflected glare. These Anti-Reflective elements are available in ICE-Blue, Cool-Green, or Ruby-Jewel. Depending on the base lens color of an ICE-TECH Advanced Polarized Lens, the appropriate anti-reflective color is selected and applied to back surface of the lens. For a non-polarized Clear-ICE lens, the patient can select the anti-reflective color. This prevents bounce back glare, such as seeing a reflection of your eye in the lens.

The front of an ICE-TECH Advanced Polarized Lens is then finished with the bonding of one of the frigid mirror ICE-TECH colors; Black-ICE, ICE-Blue, Cool-Green, Ruby-ICE, Chrome-ICE or Golden-ICE. Once this anti-reflective process is applied, the light transmission is increased from ninety-two percent light transmission to over ninety-nine percent light transmission. All of these lens processes are performed on site in the ICE-TECH Rx Lab. The lenses produced in this facility fully meet the mission statement assigned to the ICE-TECH Research and Development Department, which was; "Develop the best sunglass lens for prescription use." All this and still there is more! AR and mirror coatings have been known in the past to be high maintenance. Fingerprints, dust, water spots and smudges of some type or another always seem to find their way onto lenses, it just happens. Leave it to ICE-TECH to come up with a solution to that too! Sure, there are sprays and pens that can be applied to make it easier to clean lenses, but they are messy and need to be re-applied on a regular basis. ICE-TECH, however, has done it again with their Free-ICE Hydrophobic, Oleophobic coating that makes fingerprints, dust and smudges simply wipe right off using nothing but a lens cloth (like the high quality ICE-TECH micro-fiber bag that is supplied with every pair of ICE-TECH glasses). This Free-ICE hydrophobic is so good it never has to be re-applied, ever! What a superior product!

Lens Features:

All ICE-TECH Sunglasses offer 100% UV protection from the harmful rays of the sun.

All ICE-TECH Sunglasses block blue light, the short wave length light that can cause blurred vision and even some degenerative diseases of the eye.

All ICE-TECH Sunglasses are polarized. Non-polarized sunglasses cannot filter the most intense rays of the sun known as glare. The enhanced ICE-TECH Advanced Polarizing Filter eliminates up to 99% of all reflected glare producing the most comfortable sun lens available today.

The ADVANCED POLARIZED PRECISION-TECH LENS is the only lens that features 12 specific elements that combined offer the most advanced and comfortable sun lens available on the market today.

The TECH-LITE LENS offers the same advanced polarized technology as the PRECISION-TECH LENS but is a much lighter, optically correct polycarbonate lens material. The TECH-LITE LENS is virtually shatterproof making it ideal for use while engaged in active sports.

Both the PRECISION-TECH LENS and the TECH-LITE LENS are available in several fashionable flash mirror coatings. These specially designed coatings are functional as well, eliminating eye dryness by reflecting infra-red light.

Technical Information

What is Polarization?

A sun lens that is not polarized does little more than dim the light available to the unprotected eye. What the eye cannot do is eliminate reflective glare.

When light reflects off a horizontal surface it’s polar axis becomes aligned with that surface, thus the term "Polarized". Polarized light, better known as glare, is 7 to 10 times brighter than ambient light and can be as much as 65% of the light you see.

The human eye tries to adjust to glare by restricting the pupil in an effort to reduce the amount of light coming in over all. However, the eye requires a minimum amount of light to focus so the eye must allow in some light, and therefore some glare. The result is squinting, tired eyes, headaches, and in general, poor vision.

A polarized lens is more accurately a lens with an integrated filter that eliminates polarized light. The polarized filter is made up of vertical, parallel chains of iodine crystals that essentially block horizontally polarized light. The remaining light falls into a narrow range of intensity that the eye can easily handle.

What we can’t see can hurt us!

Even though we can’t see it, Ultra Violet light, or UV as it is often called, is of concern because of its long term damaging effects on the eye -- the greatest concern is cataracts. We can protect our eyes and prolong good eye health with a 100% UV filter.

Infra-Red Light, also invisible, can have a drying effect on the eyes. Infra-Red light is heat that is completely reflected with a mirrored lens.

Bounce Back Light:

Mirror coatings reflect light on both sides. Even though there is very little light between the eye and the lens to reflect, some light will actually bounce between the retina of the eye and mirror coating of the lens causing a "halo" effect around bright lights. Anti-reflective coatings applied to the back of the lens eliminate bounce back and will also reduce the amount of reflected light that escapes in from around the edge of the lens.

Lens colors can further enhance vision:

As a rule, a neutral gray lens is the best suited for most people. Over 65% of all sun lenses sold are gray. This is because a gray lens translates colors the most naturally.

Amber or brown lens are less popular but can actually enhance mid range colors resulting in greater contrast and depth perception. Vision during sports events such as fishing and skiing may be improved with an amber lens. However, some people have difficulty with lens that alter color, experiencing a vertigo effect or headaches.
